Am I a good enough mother? The Enneagram says: yes, but…

Motherhood can bring out in us both the greatest strength and the deepest uncertainties. Every mother—whether she admits it or not—sometimes asks herself the question: am I doing this right? Does my child know that he or she is loved? Am I enough for him or her?

In the Enneagram, each of us has our own typical fears, desires, and inner beliefs. This also applies to the role of a mother. Your type influences how you show love, what you struggle with, and what moves you most in your relationship with your child.

Below you will find parental patterns according to the Enneagram type — not to evaluate oneself, but to recognize what often operates unconsciously. Awareness is the first step towards softness, change, and deeper connection—also with oneself.

Type 1 – A mother who wants what’s best for her child

Your inner belief sounds like this: “I have to be proper, responsible, and moral.”

You often have high standards for yourself and your family. You want to raise your child to be a good person, and you take every mistake very seriously.

Shadow: fear of making mistakes, excessive self-criticism, difficulty in being relaxed and spontaneous.

Gift: consistency, values, integrity, and an ethical approach to life.

Type 2 – A mother who loves with all her heart

Your belief: “I need to be needed and helpful.”

You give your all – time, attention, warmth. Sometimes too much. You’re afraid that you’re not present enough, that your child doesn’t appreciate you or doesn’t need you.

Shadow: dependence on the feeling of self-worth based on being needed, difficulty caring for oneself.

Gift: unconditional love, empathy, sensitivity, emotional closeness.

Type 3 – The mom who works and achieves

Belief: “I have to be effective and admired.”

You want to set an example of success, motivate your child, and support their development. Sometimes, however, you feel pressure to have to do it all. „to turn out well” as a mother – also in the eyes of others.

Shadow: identifying your value with efficiency, perfectionism as a mother, pressure on the child’s achievements.

Gift: inspiration, the power of action, faith in the child's potential.

Type 4 – A mother who feels deeply

Belief: “I have to be unique and authentic.”

You give the child space for emotions and depth. However, you worry that you are not emotionally present enough or that your feelings are „too intense”.

Shadow: mood swings, a sense of separateness, comparing oneself with other mothers.

Gift: authenticity, the ability to connect deeply, acceptance of emotions.

Type 5 – The mother who needs space

Belief: “I have to be competent and self-sufficient.”

You take care to understand the child’s needs, you read a lot, you analyze. But you’re afraid that you don’t have „enough resources” – time, energy, patience.

Shadow: emotional distance, avoidance of chaos, difficulty in spontaneous reactions.

Gift: wisdom, calmness, the ability to provide logical support for the child.

Type 6 – A mother who cares and watches over

Belief: “I have to ensure safety.”

Your child is your whole world. You are attentive, loyal, and present. But you often have the „worst-case scenarios” in your head and you fear that you might miss something.

Shadow: overcontrol, fear of the future, excessive caution.

Gift: loyalty, structure, willingness to be a „dummy” in difficult moments.

Type 7 – A mother who wants to bring joy

Belief: “I have to be positive and free.”

You want your child to have a colorful, joyful childhood. You want to be creative and inspiring. But you’re afraid of boredom, restrictions, and difficult emotions—both in yourself and in your child.

Shadow: avoidance of discipline, rapid boredom, difficulty being „here and now”.

Gift: enthusiasm, creativity, contagious joy of life.

Type 8 – A mother who protects and fights

Belief: “I have to be strong and independent.”

You are ready to fight for your child, to provide them with everything they need. But sometimes you are afraid to show your weakness – and your intensity can be overwhelming.

Shadow: dominance, difficulty in softness and susceptibility to influence.

Gift: strength, courage, loyalty, unconditional support.

Type 9 – The mother who wants peace

Belief: “I have to be calm and happy.”

You create a home full of harmony. You care about peace and comfort. But it’s easy for you to forget about yourself, to adapt to the needs of others, and to lose touch with your „I”.

Shadow: avoidance of conflicts, difficulty expressing boundaries and needs.

Gift: patience, acceptance, a soothing presence.

There are no „perfect mothers”. There are mothers who feel, who try, who come back together when they get lost.

Your type doesn’t say whether you’re a good mother – but about what kind of mother you are. And awareness of this is the first step towards greater tenderness, depth, and true connection with your child.

If you don’t already know your Enneagram type, take the test.
